How to use Doxorubicin HCL Vial

Read the Patient Information Leaflet if available from your pharmacist before you start receiving doxorubicin and each time you get an infusion. If you have any questions, ask your doctor or pharmacist.

This medication is given by injection into a vein by a health care professional. The dosage is based on your medical condition, body size, and response to therapy.

If this medication touches your skin, immediately and completely wash the skin with soap and water. If this medication gets in your eye, open the eyelids and flush with plenty of water for 15 minutes. Seek immediate medical attention.

Caregivers should take precautions (e.g., wear gloves) to prevent contact with the patient's urine or other body fluid for at least 5 days after treatment. Consult your pharmacist.

Unless your doctor instructs you otherwise, drink plenty of cool fluids during treatment with this medication. This helps move the drug quickly through your body and helps reduce some of the side effects.

Doxorubicin Hydrochloride for Injection

Cancerous tumors are characterized by cell division, which is no longer controlled as it is in normal tissue. “Normal” cells stop dividing when they come into contact with like cells, a mechanism known as contact inhibition.

WARNING

NCARDIOMYOPATHY, SECONDARY MALIGNANCIES, EXTRAVASATION AND TISSUE NECROSIS, and SEVERE MYELOSUPPRESSION

Cardiomyopathy: Myocardial damage, including acute left ventricular failure can occur with doxorubicin HCl. The risk of cardiomyopathy is proportional to the cumulative exposure with incidence rates from 1% - 20% for cumulative doses ranging from 300 mg/m to 500 mg/m when doxorubicin HCl is administered every 3 weeks. The risk of cardiomyopathy is further increased with concomitant cardiotoxic therapy. Assess LVEF before and regularly during and after treatment with doxorubicin HCl [see WARNINGS AND PRECAUTIONS].

Secondary Malignancies: Secondary acute myelogenous leukemia (AML) and myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS) occur at a higher incidence in patients treated with anthracyclines, including doxorubicin HCl [see WARNINGS AND PRECAUTIONS].

Extravasation and Tissue Necrosis: Extravasation of doxorubicin HCl can result in severe local tissue injury and necrosis requiring wide excision of the affected area and skin grafting. Immediately terminate the drug and apply ice to the affected area [see WARNINGS AND PRECAUTIONS].

Severe myelosuppression resulting in serious infection, septic shock, requirement for transfusions, hospitalization, and death may occur [see WARNINGS AND PRECAUTIONS].

Doxorubicin Hydrochloride for Injection

It can also be used in the management of non-metastatic carcinoma of the bladder, where it is administered intravesically.

Action

Doxorubicin is from the family of chemotherapy drugs known as anthracyclines. Anthracyclines act directly on DNA, blocking its production and inhibiting the enzyme responsible for DNA repair. Cells do not have to be actively dividing to be affected by Doxorubicin, as is the case with some chemotherapy drugs. Doxorubicin also suppresses the immune system.

Doxorubicin Hydrochloride for Injection USP is used to produce regression in a number of neoplastic conditions such as:
Acute leukaemia.
Wilms tumour.
Neuroblastoma.
Soft tissue sarcomas.
Breast carcinoma.
Hodgkins and non-Hodgkins lymphoma.
